The weather can be unpredictable, and emergency situations like tornados, floods, or ice storms can happen with little notice. For seniors, who are more likely to have health conditions, it’s especially important to be prepared for such situations. Creating an emergency kit and developing a disaster strategy can be lifesaving.

In honor of National Preparedness Month, observed every year in September, we are sharing readiness tips. From organizing your health information to assembling a home emergency kit, these tips will help ensure that seniors are better prepared to handle the unexpected.

Disaster Planning for Older Adults

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), disaster planning begins with creating a solid strategy. Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind:

1. Organize Health Information

Make sure that family members or close friends have access to your medical information. This includes a list of your current medications, physician names, phone numbers, and pharmacies. If you rely on mail-order medications, make sure those details are included as well. Digital tools can simplify this process, and there are many apps available that allow you to keep personal medical records easily accessible. Sharing this with trusted individuals ensures that if an emergency arises, your medical needs will be met swiftly.

2. Have an Evacuation Plan

Whether it’s a fire, tornado, or flood, having a plan to evacuate your home is critical. Think through how you would escape and where you would go. Prepare any necessary equipment, such as ladders for windows or a designated safe spot outside your home. Also, ensure that family members know where you will be and how to contact you once you’ve safely evacuated.

3. Create a Family Response List

Identify family members who can respond in case of an emergency, and create a plan detailing who will be the first to respond. Be sure to include contingency plans if that person is also affected by the disaster. Share this plan with everyone involved so that each person knows what their role is in an emergency.

The CDC offers a care plan form that can help you keep all of this critical information organized and accessible.

Home Emergency Kit Essentials

Creating a home emergency kit is crucial for seniors to stay prepared. Here are a few essentials you’ll want to include:

  • Nonperishable Foods

Stock up on enough canned goods, such as meats, beans, and fruits, to last three to five days. Don’t forget to pack a manual can opener, along with paper towels, plates, and plastic utensils.

  • Medications

It’s essential to have a one- to two-week supply of prescription and over-the-counter medications in your emergency kit. Include any medical equipment or supplies you rely on, and remember your pet’s medications if needed.

  • First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is a must for any emergency situation. The American Red Cross provides a comprehensive list of items to include, and you’ll also want a whistle or horn to signal for help if needed.

  • Water

Make sure you have at least one gallon of water per person, per day, stored in your emergency kit. If you have pets, remember to account for them as well.

  • Flashlights, Batteries, and a Radio

Keeping flashlights, extra batteries, and a weather radio on hand ensures that you can stay informed and prepared during power outages. Also, include a battery-operated cell phone charger to maintain communication with loved ones or emergency services.

Preparing for Peace of Mind

Emergencies are unpredictable, but having a solid plan in place can significantly reduce the risks and stress associated with them. Taking steps to create a personalized disaster strategy, stock an emergency kit, and share essential information with loved ones can make all the difference in ensuring safety and well-being.
