Each year, Medicare offers you the opportunity to review your health coverage, to check what’s working, what could be improved, and where you might save on costs. This period, known as Medicare Open Enrollment, takes place from October 15 to December 7.
For aging adults and caregivers, this is one of the most important times of the year. Your health needs change, medications may need updating, and costs can shift. A quick review ensures your plan still supports you in the best way possible.
What is Medicare Open Enrollment
Medicare Open Enrollment (also called the Annual Enrollment Period) is the time when you can adjust your Medicare coverage.
Any changes you make will take effect January 1 of the following year.
During this period, you have the option to:
● Switch from Original Medicare (Part A and B) to a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)
● Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
● Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another
● Join, drop, or switch a Part D prescription drug plan.
Why It’s Important to Review Your Plan
Even if your current Medicare plan worked well this year, it’s smart to double-check before it renews automatically. That’s because plans can change each year, and so can your health needs.
Your medications, preferred doctors, or hospital network might no longer be covered the same way. Premiums and copays can also shift.
By reviewing your plan now, you can make sure:
● Your doctors and pharmacies remain within your plan’s network
● Your prescriptions are still covered
● You find plans that offer extra benefits like dental, vision, or hearing care
● You avoid surprise costs in the new year
How Medicare Connects with Hospitals and Clinics
Many aging adults wonder if Medicare is tied to certain hospitals or clinics. The answer depends on the type of plan you have:
● Original Medicare: This plan allows you to see any doctor or visit any hospital across the country that accepts Medicare; there are no network limits.
● Medicare Advantage Plans: This functions more like standard insurance, meaning you’ll typically need to use hospitals and clinics within your plan’s approved network, except in emergencies.
How To Review or Update Your Plan
Here’s how to make informed choices during Open Enrollment:
Visit Medicare.gov and use the Plan Finder Tool to compare plans by cost, coverage, and quality ratings.

If your current plan still meets your needs and remains available next year, you don’t need to do anything. It will renew automatically.
Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7.
Taking an hour to review your plan today can save you future stress, ensure your doctors and prescriptions stay covered, and give you confidence and reassurance for the year ahead.
